2019 will be the fourth year of the Ambassador program. Over that time you’ve seen the opportunities made available to Ambassadors (professional development and networking with dignitaries and business leaders etc) and how StudyNT has promoted the Territory as a study destination using marketing collateral from the Ambassador program, and highlighted the program as a component of the student experiences available in the NT.

The ICAE November Graduation Ceremony was held on Thursday, 29 November from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.
More than 30 students from different countries received their qualifications in Commercial Cookery and Hospitality. France consulate Ms Zoe Marcham, Philippines consulate Mr John Rivas AM and Mrs Edna Rivas, suppliers and school friends, NTG representatives including StudyNT and MigrationNT, graduates’ industry placement employers, family and friends, Hospitality Industry stakeholders and leaders (Hospitality NT, Culinary Federation, ACPET, etc) also attended this special occasion. Hospitality NT CEO, Des Crowe hosted the ceremony.
Sean Mahoney, CEO of ICAE gave an opening speech followed by Benita Malan, Principal, who delivered a beautiful speech congratulating graduates’ achievements: “Having goals to achieve is always important and the qualification you receive today will open many doors into the future - for some this may be returning to ICAE next semester to continue their learning pathway. Whatever your choices, continue to set goals as they give your life direction and boost your motivation and self confidence.”
Martijn Van Tricht, Nolwenn Le Bleiz, and Gellie Magdalena, who were class representatives from Certificate III Commercial Cookery, Certificate IV Hospitality and Diploma of Hospitality did brief speeches on behalf of their classmates. “I want to advise the next batch of students in hospitality and cookery to never lose hope. Do what you love. The harder you work for something, the greater you'll feel when you achieve it. Life is short. Live your dream and wear your passion.” Gellie said during her speech.
Graduates came to the stage one by one to receive certificates and a special graduation gift - a silver spoon with a ICAE logo - and have their pictures taken with Sean on stage. A class shot was taken for each qualification.
Congratulations go to Laura Thal, winner of the ICAE Industry Placement Student of the Year Award and Nolwenn Regina Le Bleiz, winner of the ICAE Student of the Year Award. Winners were selected based on their Industry Placement and class performance, as well as employers and tutors’ comments. Benita presented the awards and took pictures with them individually.
During the ceremony, Sean presented a Certificate of Appreciation to each IP employer present as well. Industry placement is an important component of the ICAE Hospitality courses, especially for international students. We want to thank all industry placement employers for their generous help taking students for the industry placement this year.
Current III Commercial Cookery students designed and prepared a special menu for this ceremony, and Hospitality students set up the venue and served the guests.
International College of Advanced Education (ICAE) recently signed an MOU with Saigontourist Hospitality College in Vietnam (STHC) and is now officially partnered with STHC. This partnership has included the official opening of a representative office in the STHC Campus in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam on 8th November.
The MOU signing ceremony was witnessed by the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory Government, The Hon. Michael Gunner, as well as STHC management, staff, and students, and other Industry and Government delegates from Darwin, Australia.

STHC Hospitality students presented a great show of bartending skills during the ceremony, followed by the traditional Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for opening this Rep Office followed by a campus tour.
WIth the recent changes from the Australian Government for student visas, students from Vietnam (and many other countries including the Philippines) will not need financial evidence and English proficiency proof when they apply for the student visa. This is definitely good news for prospective Vietnamese and Filipino students who want to study with ICAE.

Bacolod, a city on the northwest coast of Negros Island in the Philippines, is where Nancy Mansinares, Demy Lauron, Mary Mae Joy Marcial, Justin Dela Paz, Duane Ruiz, and Joery Rio proudly call home.
The six Bacolod students successfully obtained a government scholarship: Negros Occidental Scholarship. “We went through a series of interviews, took the IELTS exam and medical check”, Mary said, “We were very lucky to pass all the tests and get this scholarship.”
Nancy, Demy, Mary, Justin, and Duane came to Darwin in August this year and are currently enrolled in Certificate IV Hospitality, while Rio is doing Certificate III Commercial Cookery.
“I was super excited to study in Darwin and ICAE”, Nancy said in the pre-departure interview, “I was excited to come to study in ICAE to enhance my knowledge and skills in the field of hospitality because aside from classroom training, ICAE provides an opportunity for industry placement. I was expecting to discover more about the hospitality industry in prominent organisations and be a part of the management team.”
“Darwin is such a accomodating city, people are very friendly to international students. It just took me two weeks to land a good hospitality job.” Duane said proudly, “Now I have two jobs, which support me significantly covering living expenses here.”
In ICAE, students usually have class from Monday to Wednesday each week, so that they can work part-time from Thursday to Sunday, which are the most demanding time in the industry. “For the past three months, ICAE nourished my mind and helped me in many ways. Everything that was discussed in our classroom is also being practiced in our workplace”, Justin said, “Moreover, we learned about the legislation of alcohol consumption and more in Australia, especially in the northern territory.”
As part of the course, students have real-life exercises while studying. Recently Dementia NT and ICAE held a function together for the elders, during which hospitality students were serving about 200 customers.
“It was an opportunity to apply what I've learn from my trainers during the event to deal with people as we all played the role as real waiting staff during the event”, Demy said. “It was quite difficult at first. As a waitress I had to be careful to approach to every guests because some of them have hearing impairments and did not want to feel they were a burden to others, and needed sincerity in what I said. But what I have learned from that is ‘always be patient and act professionally.’”
“I chose Commercial Cookery class because I love cooking”, Joery said. “The trainers are very knowledgeable and I have learnt a lot during the class. Living miles away from home is not easy, but being with my colleagues, new found friends, classmates, teachers, and bosses, life here is somehow fun and the challenges are bearable. I’m looking forward to more learning, experiences, and memories here at ICAE.”
Diploma qualified, Etienne is a creative and skilled Chef with extensive experience in event planning and catering.
Born and raised in South Africa, Etienne came to Australia in 2016. He started to teach in ICAE in April 2018, and has been teaching many units including Certificate III Commercial Cookery, Certificate IV Commercial Cookery, Certificate IV Hospitality services, and Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management.
“I have always loved teaching after being an instructor in the military for almost 10 years, after which I did lots of interesting contracts all over Africa untill I settled again in 2010 and decided to become a Chef,” Etienne said, “ICAE gave me the opportunity to teach in hospitality and cookery, both of which are my favourite topics.”
Having been a Chef for 6 years, Etienne has rich experience in the kitchen, especially catering. “I became a Chef to be more settled in one place, after working all over.” In 2013, Etienne established his own business: Nel Catering. “I love entertaining and hosting people, with Nel Catering I had the opportunity to both and make money.”
Christine Diaz, a current Certificate IV in Hospitality student praises Etienne as “one of the best teachers I've encountered in my whole life. He knows how to balance everything like be a professional teacher and be friends with his students. He is very kind and optimistic. Every time he discussed something, he always makes sure that everyone can understand. He is very approachable when it comes on our assessments and he explains things clearly in great detail for us. I'm sure a lot of students will like him.”
“The most important lesson I want to teach my students is to never give up, never say you can not do a certain task, and have an attitude of ‘I can't do it YET’ and then go out and make it happen.” Etienne said.
